Der Brautstrauß - The Wedding Bouquet

The second most important accessory after the wedding dress, is the bridal bouquet. The bridal bouquet rounds off the look of the bride and adds that special something. No one knows how it's going to look like and usually not even the bride until she is holding it in her hands on the wedding day.

The bridal bouquet can be made up of various flowers and can have any shape, let it be tightly or loosely tied. Even small pendants and bows are very popular.

When I met up with my florist, I gave her following information: the bouquet schould be loosely tied, it should incorporate wheats and oats (basically things found in the field) and it shouldn't be too colorful, mainly pinkish because I had an artificial peony which was quite bold.

As mentioned in the last post, many brides in the United States choose artificial flowers. These are resistant, allergy free and will last forever. Peonies usually wither by the beginning of July, so to be on the safe side I bought an artificial one. This peony was added in with real flowers. You couldn't tell if it was real or fake.

It was also important for me to add cotton flowers into my bouquet to represent my American ancestors. My great great grandparents had been slaves and worked in the cotton fields of South Carolina. In the most rarest cases were slaves allowed to marry out of love and had to get permission from the master.

On the stem of the bridal bouquet I had a pendant with a picture of me and my German grandfather (who passed away way too soon, when I was 3 years old). He told my grandmother that she would still live to see me marry etc. The celebration took place on his birthday so he could be part of the wedding. In addition there was also a bracelet from Nipi-Key around the stem that had 10 angels, each to represent one of us.

So many details created a perfect picture. Everything had a meaning and I am happy that bouquet told a story.

Tipps & Tricks für deine Hochzeit / Tips & Tricks for your Wedding

Hier meine Tipps dazu:

Also wieder zur Schneiderin.

Planning a wedding can be quite overwelming. Especially nowadays there are so many platforms like Pintrest, Tumblr, Instagram one can get inspired from. But before you dive into the wedding-mania, don't forget to have a clear mind and have a pen and paper near you.

Before you start with any wedding preparations you should start off with getting the formal things cleared away. That means to go to the town hall and get as much information as possible. In Germany that is the case because you have to make appointments for the notice of intended marriage and hand in the needed documents. Our case was "special" due to having two different citizenships, thus other documents were needed. Normally you need your identification card and your birth certificate, as I was born in  a different city than that of where we were getting married, I had to apply to get it. My husband, Nicodemus, was born in the United States and needed his birth certificate from there and also a single status affidavit. If your spouse does not know sufficient German, you have to hire a interpreter (this person has to be there for the notice of intended marriage and on the wedding day) to translate the fomalities. Thanks to a few friends of mine, who are married to Americans, I didn't have as much work of finding out things. They told me what we required from the American side. I believe this time is the most stressful because you have to get all the documents and make all the appointments. Once you have managed to do all this, then its time to take the first big step, deciding on the wedding date.

It is very important to decide on the wedding date as soon as posible and to reserve it. It is also advisable to have two or three other desired dates, just to have a fallback, just in case one or the other date is already booked. Please don't forget to state a time!

Once you have this checked off, you can finally begin with the wedding preparations!

Thanks to my boss, who is also a wedding planner, I found out that the most important thing is the venue/location. Once this has been confirmed/reserved, nothing stands in your way.

Ofcourse it is important to arrange/organize/reserve the cake, band, DJ, photographer, wedding car, transportation, interpreter as soon as possible as well.

Should you be ordering decoration or other things, always make sure from where they are shipping so you can calculate the shipping time.

You can save a lot of money if you watch out on what you spend but here are a few things I wouldn't be too picky about:

Photography: For me this was very important. I wanted to cherish this wonderful day, no matter what the cost. My parents didn't understand, back then (1987) it was sufficient to get a few pictures taken at a photo store.  After they saw our wedding pictures, they understood why we were willing to spend a tad bit more.
It is important to make inquires, especially if your budget isn't too high. You should also make sure if the style of photographer reflects what you have in mind. Make sure to ask friends and relatives, who have gotten married, if they can recommend you a photographer.
We also decided that no one was allowed to take pictures as long as the photographer was there. We had one exception and that was my uncle, who was filming everything. After the photographer left, everyone was allowed to pull out their cellphones or cameras.

Make Up: I did my own make up but only because I am a make up artist and I praticed like crazy. I asked a friend, who works at M.A.C, if she could possibly do my make up but due to workrelated issues, she wasn't able to. I could have asked my best friend, who is also a make up artist, but as she was attending our wedding as well, I didn't want to pressure her with that.  I can only recommend to get your make up done by a professional and not to be stingy. I have gotten many requests, asking if I could do bridal make up for 30$, unfortunately that is unrealistic. You want to look beautiful the entire day and enhance your natural beauty, so why be cheap? Make Up Artists are there to consult you and help you look amazing on the most important day of your life. Always make sure to schedule a trial appointment so you can see the result and see if you recognize yourself because in the end you don't want to wear a mask.

Hair Do: Just as with make up I would recommend you to get your hair done by a beautician. I would also suggest to schedule a trial date. I had two trial appointments and in the end I chose a completely different do.

VEEEEEEEEEERY IMPORTANT: If you have already ordered your dress, please do not try to lose weight. Ofcourse this is exactly what I did. My dress was already getting alterations and my finacé wanted to lose some weight, I wanted to be supportive, so I agreed. Although I was proud of myself that I had lost around 16lbs, I was quite sad that my dress was now too big. So I had to go to the seamstress again. Unnecessary stress that you can avoid.

Should you want certain flowers for your wedding, ask your florist if you can order them during that season. I desperately wanted peonies but as they wither by the beginning of July, I kept my hopes low and bought a fake one, which is a good alternative. My florist ended up adding the fake peony with real flowers to the bouquet. In the United States its quite common to use artificial flowers for the entire bouquet. This is perfect for people with allergies and for those of you, who would like to keep your bouquet forever.

Now I have come to the end of my tips & tricks. Should it all go over your head, take a deep breath and ask for help. Should you still have questions or suggestions, please let me know in the comment section below.

Just Married!!!

I know it has been quite quiet on my blog but many of you might know that I was busy arranging the last preparations for the wedding. On July 7th, 2016...

We finally said "yes"!

It was a wonderful celebration with our immediate family but I will tell you more in another post. I've decided to make a little series, so no one is taken by surprise with a huge post.
